Nadia Bekoe

Graduate research assistant
Biography
Nadia Bawa Fio Bekoe is a Ph.D. student in Chemical and Biochemical Engineering at the University of Iowa. Motivated by the growing challenge of plastic pollution, she is interested in advancing microbial platforms for bioplastic production and developing approaches that support a circular bioeconomy.

Her interest in metabolic engineering and sustainable bioproducts is informed by her experience evaluating how pretreatment affects the degradation of polylactic acid (PLA) plastics during anaerobic digestion. She aims to develop microbial engineering solutions that improve the sustainability, production, and end-of-life management of bioplastics.

Nadia earned her B.Sc. in Agricultural Engineering from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Ghana and her M.S. in Biosystems Engineering from Oklahoma State University, USA.
